On July 3, the donation checks for the conservation of the habitat and nests of the Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus) and Red Macaw (Ara macao) for the 2015 season were handed over.
The checks were presented by the Fundación del Rio with the support of Envol Vert. Envol Vert hopes to support the actions of the 3 beneficiaries of the community of Bartola (where a project of Sylvopastoralism is also conducted). They are Javier, Perfecto and Calixto, who have seen the macaws choose the trees of their property and have thus become nest guardians. For each nest protected, $100 was given to the guardian.
Paying for the protection of the nests allows both to protect the chicks that are born in these nests (the Macaw is an endangered species and the forests of the Rio San Juan are their last refuge in Nicaragua). This also allows the protection of the trees themselves, the beneficiary realizes that his tree has more value in foot than cut.
20 nest guardians from different communities were present at the donation ceremony accompanied by their families and friends. It was an opportunity to share their experiences and the contribution of each one to the conservation of the Macaws of the Rio San Juan.
Simion Rivas, host of the event, was very happy to open the doors of his house to share this moment with everyone. He mentioned that “we are all one big family and we are doing a common task of conserving the macaws and biodiversity. I am proud to be a part of it.
