As part of the aguaje fruit (Mauritia flexuosa) enhancement of the Yanayacu Maquia Conservation Concession (CCYM), the team of four park rangers and the project coordinator set out on a trip along the Romayna stream towards this flooded ecosystem. The objective was to obtain field data from the evaluation of the palm tree of interest.
Reaching the area required time and handling situations that only the Amazon forest can present. Thus, we found an electric eel that prevented us from identifying the species (Electrophorus electricus and Electrophorus voltai with the DNA study we did in March), due to the speed and caution we had to take.
Finally, we could carry out the georeferencing, sizing and cluster counting of 82 individuals of Mauritia flexuosa, in two forest management units (FMU). This data will be submitted to the Forest and Wildlife Management Unit Ucayali – Contamana in Loreto. This is part of the process for CCYM to obtain a permit for the sustainable use of natural resources other than timber. In addition, this would initiate an economic alternative to deforestation…
