Since March in Tingo Maria, a new work dynamic has started. The activities have taken a new turn! Until then, the project was exclusively focused on the cocoa producers who were members of the partner cooperative Alto Huallaga.

In order to create cohesion within our territory of action, but also to get closer to other actors in the cocoa sector, the association started to exchange with other influential institutions and projects in our areas of action.

Today, we also work with smaller and more autonomous structures, associations of cocoa producers. What they have in common is their participation in a project of the regional directorate of agriculture. A project that provides them with technical support for post-harvest cocoa activities and thus improves the quality of the final product. As the project led by Envol Vert begins with a phase concerning upstream agriculture and the establishment of agroforestry systems, our intervention is complementary to the work of our new ally.

Over the past few weeks, we have held a series of meetings to present Envol Vert and, above all, the objectives and methodology of the “agroforestry coffee and cocoa in the Peruvian Amazon” programme. Once a minimum of ten producers are motivated, a new group is formed and practical activities can begin. Five new nurseries were added to the project in May and two more will be built in June.

The next steps will be to start awareness-raising training on the preservation of the forest and its biodiversity, as well as to start collective sessions on transplanting young tree seedlings adapted to the area and the needs of the participants. For this purpose, our brand new germination area in the municipal nursery will receive seeds of species native to the region in the next few days.
