Forests are like the vital organs of the planet; they are as important as the heart, brain and blood to human beings. As we know, forests provide goods (food, medicine, wood, animals, fiber, seeds, water) and services (climate regulation, fuel, water regulation, erosion control, carbon storage, shelter for genetic biodiversity of flora and fauna, home to different cultures). 30% of the Earth is covered by forests, so we must preserve and protect them. To raise awareness of all this and give them some recognition, the “INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FORESTS” was established and is celebrated every year on March 21.

To celebrate this day, the Environmental Department (Gerencia de Medio Ambiente) and the EDUCCA program of the Municipality of José Crespo y Castillo in Aucayacu (Province of Leoncio Prado, Department of Huánuco) organized an educational workshop with the students of the Hans Víctor Langermak High school. The team of Tingo Maria, composed of the coordinator of the zone, Brighitt De la o, and the french volunteer Zoe Rouault, raised awareness among more than 200 children about the forests, their importance, their biodiversity and their conservation. During the day, the Peruvian National Police (PNP) also participated in the event, providing information on illegal logging, the legal processes related to this crime and the related penalties. In addition, the environmental engineer, Mishele Portal, responsible for the EDUCCA program, developed the theme of environmental education, the composting process and environmental awareness.

After the workshop, the Envol Vert team and the EDUCCA program manager, Mishele Portal, visited the compost production center, where the procedure for obtaining compost and to whom it is addressed was explained. A nursery is also run to help promote the propagation of endangered forest species, in connection with environmental education efforts.

Thus ended the celebration of the International Day Of Forests, which made us reflect on our actions as humans and how these actions directly affect the forests. A great opportunity to make new generations aware of forest preservation actions.
