To mark International Forests Day, celebrated annually on March 21 under the auspices of the UN, the Tarn-based associations GFC Les Hauts-Bois, Association Calelh, Association Epilda —and the NGO Envol Vert organized a unique exploration day in Anglès, in the Tarn region, which brought together 22 participants.

International Forests Day is highlighted to demonstrate the importance of forests for biodiversity, the climate, and human societies, and to foster an understanding of the challenges of preserving forested areas and the actions needed to protect them. Passionate experts and curious minds gathered for a day rich in discovery, exploring activities that highlight the many facets of forests—not only as vital ecosystems but also as a sustainable economic driver. This year’s theme was “Forests and Economies.” The event therefore offered participants the opportunity to meet artisans from the local forest and wood industry, starting with secondary wood processing (cabinetmaker), moving on to primary processing (sawmill operator), and concluding with a forest manager.

The Morning

The day began with a meeting with woodworker Lili-Lou Linget to explore the art of working with local wood and to appreciate how wood is transformed into functional or artistic objects. During the session, Lili-Lou shared her professional journey and explained how she selects and works with wood. She also discussed her commitment to maximizing the use of local wood in her work, as well as the obstacles she faces in doing so.

The morning concluded with a picnic lunch and a game called “Le Super Bosquet,” designed to raise awareness about imported deforestation and its connection to our daily choices.

The Afternoon

We then gathered at the Chalets Cauquil sawmill, where giant machines, the scent of fresh wood, and detailed explanations about log processing and chalet construction highlighted the visit.

The day concluded with a guided walk through the forest, deep in nature, led by a former forest manager to help us understand the importance of sustainable forest management for preserving natural resources.

The day demonstrated that a healthy forest enables the development of a resilient and sustainable economy.
