reforestation sierra nevada
This month, our two volunteers on the working on the project of forest restoration in Guaimaro, located in the Sierra Nevada in Colombia, have spent a lot of their time and efforts preparing a very special event:

On the 12th of October we will be holding a day for the reforestation and replanting of around 60 trees along the banks of the Palomino river and surrounding forest lands, with the help of local children. Our aim is to get children involved in the conservation of the forests on the one hand, and the protection of their water sources on the other.

In preparation for this event, we have been holding twice-weekly workshops for children, which try to get them thinking about environmental concerns and encourage them to start taking the necessary steps as soon as possible.
In the area where we are working, the focus on the access to water is crucial since this water is essential for growing crops, as well as the day to day running of the village. Access to water has, however, sadly become more problematic over the last few years and we have noticed a significant drop in the water levels of the river. The local community also tell us that rainfall has declined sharply in the last 3 to 4 years.

You may, perhaps, be wondering how replanting on the banks of the river will ease the villagers’ access to water? Well, in just 15 years time, the trees will already form a broad enough canopy to cover the river and prevent any significant evaporation from occurring, thus keeping the water within the ecosystem. Furthermore, the growth of the trees will help maintain steady levels of carbon in the atmosphere. By planting several different species of trees, we will also be boosting the natural biodiversity of the Sierra Nevada region, which will lead to a whole host of different ecosystemic benefits!

Here is a picture of the activities which we have organised for the local children. Here, the children are creating and painting placards made out of recycled wood, and each child will put their placard alongside the tree which they plant on Monday 12th of October!

If you too want to get involved with the reforestation of the Sierra Nevada, and you’d like to make sure our event is as successful as possible, make a donation to Envol Vert and help us to buy more trees!
