Presentation of donations to the Green Macaw and Scarlet Macaw nest keepers
On July 3, the donation checks for the conservation of the habitat and nests of the Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus) and Red Macaw (Ara macao) for the 2015 season were presented. The checks were presented by the Fundación del Rio with the support of Green Flight. Envol Vert specifically supports the actions of the 3 beneficiaries of the community of Bartola (where a project of Sylvopastoralism is also conducted). They are Javier, Perfecto and Calixto, who have seen the macaws choose the trees on their property and have thus become nest guardians. For each nest protected, $100 was given to the guardian. Paying for the protection of the nests allows both to protect the chicks that are born in these nests (the Macaw is an endangered species and the forests of the Rio San Juan are their last refuge in Nicaragua). This also allows the protection of the trees themselves, the beneficiary realizes that his tree has more value in foot than cut. 20 guardians of nests of different communities were present at the delivery of the donations accompanied by their family and friends. It was an opportunity to share their experiences and the contribution of each one to the conservation of the Macaws of the Rio San Juan. Simion Rivas, host of the event, was very happy to open the doors of his house to share this moment with everyone. He mentioned that “we are all one big family and we are doing a common task of conserving the macaws and biodiversity. I am proud to be a part of it.

Macaw Photo Contest
Seeing Green and Red Macaws flying freely in their natural ecosystem is an opportunity that the Fundacion del Rio, with the support of Envol Vert offers to some people who love birds and have the will to contribute to their conservation. From May 8 to 11, 2015 for the second occasion was realized a trip of observation of the Macaws “Macaw Adventure”. Its objective is to promote the conservation of the habitat of these beautiful birds and at the same time help the families of farmers “nest keepers” (who have active nests in the trees of their farms) to obtain other economic resources through the sale of food and accommodation services for the participants. On this occasion the group was composed of professional photographers, national and local tourist guides, tour operators and national and international journalists. During the visit that was made, the participants were able to observe 5 nests of Red Macaws and Green Macaws in 2 communities (Bijagua, Bartola) but also toucans, parakeets, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, poisonous frogs and snakes. “For me it was an exciting and adventurous experience, to be able to see Macaws flying over my head and the chicks calling their parents, it was a lot of emotion,” said Rene Lucia Ramos of the Spanish news agency EFE.
Environmental education workshop
This year work was done with 4 elementary schools, including Bartola, on the following themes:
1.  Protected Areas for the Green Macaws
2. Climate change and solid waste management

Nests monitoring
12 missions were carried out in the community of Bartola, in order to follow the potential nests indicated by the local population, as well as the nests of the previous season. The visits were made every week for each nest. This year 4 Macaw nests, 2 Red Macaws (Ara macao) and 2 Green Macaws (Ara ambiguus) were identified on 3 Mountain Almond trees and one Cedro Macho tree. The nest of Mr. Señor Perfecto Rivera is a Cedro Macho that is 67 meters high and 60 cm in diameter. The nest is new, it hosts Scarlet Macaws, is circular and in good condition. UTM coordinates:: X 0794603, Y 1218211 The other nest of Perfecto Rivera exists since 2012 on a Mountain Almond tree of 70 meters high, which was killed by a lightning strike, the nest is shoe-shaped and hosts Green Macaws. UTM coordinates: X 160794158 Y 1219113 The nest of Calixto Gonzales is also in a Mountain Almond tree which is very green with many branches. It is a heart shaped Green Macaw nest under orchids. The nest is active since 2012. The last one is Perfecto Rivera Rivera, also in a Mountain Almond tree but smaller (41 meters). The Red Macaw nest is triangular with knots on its edges, it has existed since 2012.UTM coordinates: X 0794603, Y 1218211
