The department of Ucayali is located in central Peru, in the lower Amazon jungle.
Ucayali is one of the regions with the largest number of native communities in Peru, with 20 ethnic groups of indigenous peoples (Amahuaca, Ashaninka, Asheninka, Awajún, Cashinahua, Chitonahua, Iskonawa, Kakataibo, Kichwa, Kukama Kukamiria, Madija, Marinahua, Mashco Piro, Mastanahua, Matsigenka, Nahua, Sharanahua, Shipibo-Konibo, Yaminahua y Yine). However, these communities are threatened by external pressures invading their territories, including illegal felling, poaching or the expansion of the agricultural frontier by farmers or religious (Mennonite/Israelite) communities.
Envol Vert’s objective in the area is to work with two Shipibo-Konibo native communities: Nuevo Ahuaypa and Dos de Mayo, both located in the province of Iparia. Envol Vert is therefore working closely with the province’s Indigenous Federation (FECONADIP), to help them improve their means and abilities to guard their territory, but also to develop a sustainable economic activity that will enable them to diversify their income and thus improve their living conditions.
